Sunday is Yoga Night at BC Place as fans will have the opportunity to take part in a post-match session with local guru Will Blunderfield. To register or to book a group of 10 or more, please contact Steve Williams at email@example.com or 604-484-7871. Ahead of Sunday's session, we chatted with Will about his philosophy on the benefits of yoga.
Q: How long have you been teaching yoga at Steve Nash Fitness World & Sports Club?
“I have been teaching for them for about two years now, and I have been teaching yoga in Vancouver since 2008.”
Q: The ‘Caps are hosting defending MLS Cup champions Sporting Kansas City. Who would the “champions” of yoga be?
“I like Baron Baptist, he is pretty cool! He is a yoga teacher who I am really inspired by, he is from San Francisco. I watched a lot of his DVD’s and stuff and he sort of inspired me to become a yoga teacher, he has his own style and he doesn’t apologize for who he is, I really like teachers like that who share what they love and they are not too concerned to try to fit into a mold.”
Q: What are some good yoga exercises for soccer players?
“I think meditation in general would be very beneficial. While meditating you process your thoughts better and you are more focused on your tension, your breath and staying on your vortex, which is your centre. So, I would say gentle routines that focus on your breath, to sort of let your breath lead the movements rather than trying to force the movement and that can bring you to this sort of more chilled kind of state.”
Q: What are the general benefits of yoga? Does yoga help prevent injury?
“Yoga includes stretching, so this helps soccer players to become less susceptible to different kinds of injuries, like a sprained ankle or foot. Yoga works your weak spots. If you are working all these different poses and trying all these new movements, you are working your body to all these different positions that it has probably never been in before so it’s just going to enhance your overall physicality in ways that you never thought possible, like little muscles will start to pop out in places where you have never realized you even had them.”
Q: Could yoga conceivably help you become a better soccer player?
“For sure, I get a lot of soccer players in my classes, especially in my hot classes, they find that the heat is almost like a cardio exercise, cause you are sweating in like 40 degrees heat and your body has to learn how to acclimate to that so you get this amazing cardio workout for the whole hour to 75 minutes depending on the length of my class, but it’s definitely useful for cardio. Soccer players need the cardio exercise to perform better.”
Q: What are you most looking forward to from this Sunday’s yoga session at BC Place?
“I am just looking forward to rock it out with all these yogis, I just think my classes are always like a celebration of life in a way and a celebration of diversity; whether you are soccer player, or a lawyer, or whether you are black, or white, gay or straight, we can all just let our guard down and work out together and feel good together.”
Q: What’s the best way for interested fans to get involved in yoga?
“I would say, go to my website willblunderfield.com and I got my full schedule there and I teach everything from hot yoga to this new style of yoga I created myself, which is basically yoga and indoor cycling. I teach that at Steve Nash Fitness World & Sports Club actually, at its yoga location and it is basically just like a conscious cardio workout, which instead of like competing in a spinning class, it is more about turning inwards and focusing on your breath more like yoga medication.”
Q: How has yoga changed your life?
“I think it has made me more compassionate towards myself and my feelings. They say that you cannot get away with what you don’t cultivate for yourself so it sort of helped me cultivate more of a base of self-love that I can extend to other people. I am a working progress, even accepting that I am a working progress it’s a huge thing, just sort of learning to be ok where I am and love where I am and who I am. Yoga helps me to be more loving in general.”
Q: You have supported children and adults who have faced difficult times in their lives, whether physically or emotionally, how has yoga changed their lives?
“I taught them the fact that we are all the same. I volunteered at the Dr. Peter Centre last year and taught yoga to the people there and I have taught yoga to the blind, I taught yoga to many different groups of people and it goes back to the fact that we are all the same and no matter what your ability level is or what labels you have, we are all the same, we all just want to feel good, we all just want to love. It made me realize that within our diversity we actually are all one.”

Message from Will: "I had an interview with Oxygen Mag in Korea and it's out in stores today! had good old chit chat about yoga, my music and G Dragon!"
Q: Hello Will, Thank you for sitting down with us for an interview for Oxygen Korea. For Koreans who do not know about you well, please introduce yourself.
W: Hello Oxygen Magazine Korea! It is a treat to chat with you. I am a yoga teacher and recording artist based out of beautiful Vancouver, BC Canada. I am fortunate to get to travel the word teaching yoga and performing at studios, conferences, and also more mainstream venues. My intention is to share as much joy as I can through yoga, music, and my message of love.
Q: When did you start Yoga? Also explain your own yoga style.
W: I began studying yoga when I was at Musical Theater Conservatory in NYC. That was back in 2003 when I was 17. I found yoga to be very grounding amongst the hustle and bustle of the big city. One of our most strict acting teachers made us do very challenging yoga routines before we went onstage to clear our minds, balance our bodies, and cultivate focus and the ability to listen to our acting and musical partners.
For me, therefore, yoga has always been a marriage with self-expression and music. It says in the Bhagavad Gita (the core text of yoga) “Yoga is the practice of tolerating the consequences of being yourself.” I always encourage my students to feel free to be who they are, to move at their own pace, and to explore different ways of being present throughout the class.
About your yoga style, what do you have philosophical idea for doing yoga?
I’m inspired by the Vedas (another yogic text) where it says, “drop the teachings, create your own practice, and find your own truth.” I am inspired by yoga teachers like Sadie Nardini (from Brooklyn, NY), Heeki Park (Japanese-Korean), and Akira Watamoto (from Japan) who aren’t afraid to cultivate their own styles that are true to their hearts. I believe that when you are true to yourself, your offering will resonate more and be more healing for people who are like you. In order for your students to be able to “find” you, you must be brave and speak your truth, and your tribe will surround you. Like heals like.
Q: There are many people who have inspired and impressed on your music. Please say about your first album.
W: Thank you! With an aim to create something modern and new, my sound is a unique collision of rock opera, devotional chant and pop music. I weave spoken word with traditional Indian instruments including the harmonium. For me it's about getting more people exposed to yoga through the universality of pop music!! I am currently working on new music with producers Mike Southworth and Brian West (U2, Nelly Furtado, K'Naan, Savage Garden).
The music I write is designed to connect, designed to heal…I wrote this album for people who struggle with insecurity, shame, and self-image issues. It's about using chant music to bring us into this surreal place of it's enough, I'm enough. I'm ok. You can listen to my music at www.itunes.com/willblunderfield
Q: What do you think about your own music world and music style?
W: I love that yoga music is so diverse! There are other chant artists on the same label as myself (nutonemusic.com) who fuse everything from reggae, world, adult contemporary, Brazilian fusion, and more with yoga chant. I love incorporating Sanskrit mantras into my pop and theatrical music because it raises the vibration of the songs. A MANTRA is a mystical energy encased in a sound structure. Every mantra contains within its vibration a certain power. Upon concentration and repetition of a given mantra, its energy is liberated and takes form...
Q: I heard that you play spontaneous music in your class. Where those inspirations come from?
W: I love that I get to perform almost every day in my classes during savasana. My original compositions are inspired by devotional chant, World Music, Musical Theater and Mantra Music. Sometimes the whole class sings as a group. Singing is a form of Pranayama. Music can be very cathartic, healing, and, like yoga, helps us come from our hearts.
Q: You are living in Canada and do yoga. What do you think about distinctive style of yoga in Canada? Also please say about difference between yoga in Canada and yoga in other countries.
W: Vancouver, Canada is considered one of the yoga capitals of North America! In fact, lululemon, the popular yoga apparel company, was created here!! One of the unique aspects of Vancouver’s yoga scene is the beautiful outdoor classes that happen in our parks, beaches and retreats in the summer. In fact, I am leading a special Yoga Fit retreat for my Korean and Japanese fans along with Heeki Park here at the end of July 2013 that includes a fun trip to Whister, BC. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org or go to willblunderfield.com for more details!
Q: Please recommend place for practicing yoga and good teachers in Canada.
W: Chopra Yoga Center (ChopraYoga.com) and Westcoast Hot Yoga (WestcoastHotYoga.com) are both two beautiful studios I teach at here in Canada. Some great teachers here are Eoin Finn, Dan Clement, and Gloria Latham.
Q: At the end of interview, hope you see in Korea someday, and say something to yogis in Korea.
W: I hope to come to Korea very soon! G-Dragon is one of my favorite artists and my best friend is from Seoul! And I love Bi Bim Bap

AMAZING TOUR: An Experience to Enlighten.
Yoga meets music, song and dance to create dynamic delight for all ages!
What do you get when you mix two high-energy yoga teachers who are also music-making maniacs, dancing fools and fabulous friends?
In a unique yoga quest, chart topping musician Blunderfield and voice artist Ingrid Nilson join together to inspire and uplift the entire world. And they're starting with Asia.
We aim to tell a story about liberation and equality through yoga, fashion, movement and music. With a full set-list of original music, ancient mantras and chart-topping tunes, classes are engaged in an immersive and inclusive yoga experience.
The journey begins with Will and Ingrid on a magic space ship, suspending the students’ perception of time, space, location and dimension. We are trapped on a planet that is first presented as a Utopian society and gradually appears more and more dystopian.
We find ourselves stuck in a conformist society with no culture. Ingrid and Will are essentially fugitives with a singular objective: To free as many people as we can through the socially subversive power of yoga, music & self-expression.
We start in the ship with plain, simple colourless outfits eventually bursting out in song, feathers, brighter colors and more revealing outfits. Wink.
Come aboard for a magical concert spaceship experience complete with dancing and singing in multiple languages mixed into a yoga class for all levels.
It will engage, inspire and uplift.

Vancouver singer and yoga teacher Will Blunderfield and Sachie Kageyama are taking healing yoga and music to children who survived the 2011 Fukushima earthquake and tsunami. They're holding a Vancouver fundraiser Jan. 19.
Photograph by: Les Bazso, PNG , Vancouver Sun
Sachie Kageyama can't forget Fukushima. The city, her childhood home, was struck by a catastrophic triple meltdown at its nuclear power plant following the earthquake and tsunami in March 2011.
While touring Japan last September with yoga teacher and singer-songwriter Will Blunderfield, the music manager met a young girl whose family had moved out of Fukushima after the disaster.
"She was in a new city and none of the children in the park wanted to play with her or touch her. They thought she was radioactive."
In Fukushima, families are still afraid to let their children play outdoors, says Kageyama. Restrictions on outdoor play were put in place after the disaster, an attempt to limit exposure to radiation. Most restrictions have been lifted, but the fear remains.
A year after the meltdown, 36 per cent of the children in the area are suffering from abnormal cysts and growths on their thyroids.
Although dozens of indoor playgrounds are being built, children are also suffering from a sense of loss, headaches, depression and rising obesity, according to health researchers.
Their plight inspired Kageyama and Blunderfield to design a unique aid mission - to bring yoga and music to the children of Fukushima.
"The purpose is to bring hope and joy," said Blunderfield.
The Fukushima project, an initiative entirely funded through donations, will bring an inspirational yoga and music experience to elementary school children and preschoolers in Fukushima during a week-long series of events in March.
In addition to bringing his musical yoga to children, Blunderfield will train elementary school teachers in children's yoga. To facilitate ongoing opportunities for the schoolchildren to do yoga, they are fundraising to buy yoga mats for the schools.
"Yoga and music are life forces, they elevate," Blunderfield said.
Blunderfield's unique "glee yoga" incorporates singing, dancing and inspirational play, making it a hit with kids and adults, and has made him one of Vancouver's most beloved yoga teachers.
Making yoga fun is one of Blunder-field's specialties - and he has seen his own life turned around by the practice.
The singer-songwriter, who grew up in Vancouver, was a choir nerd well before Glee made that sort of thing cool. He studied musical theatre in New York before returning to Canada where he tried out for Canadian Idol.
After getting cut from the top 75 for being "too theatrical," Blunderfield immersed himself in yoga. After he started singing in classes - everything from rock anthems to chant to his own songs - he found his voice, an audience and a following.
Blunderfield has a huge following in Japan, where yoga and pop culture intersect in unusual ways. On a recent tour, he was surprised to hear his yoga-influenced tune Longtime Sun in rotation on a pop station, played right after Christina Aguilera.
"In Tokyo, I taught a yoga class. They gave me a Britney Spears microphone and a disco ball came down from the ceiling," he recalls.
After performing at the opening and closing ceremonies of the Yokohama Yoga fest - one of the largest yoga festivals in the world - last September and participating in a local Pray For Japan relief fundraiser, he and Kageyama decided to create their own relief effort.
Kageyama, who flew over to Japan immediately after the earthquake toting plastic bins full of infant formula, diapers and noodles, said her sister laughed at her when she showed up wearing makeshift radiation gear - three layers of face masks, waterproof clothing and goggles.
Like the rest of the world, she was operating out of fear. This rescue operation, says Blunderfield, "is about love."
The effects of the radiation on the 360,000 children under the age of 18 who lived in Fukushima Prefecture is not yet fully understood, but "the fear and stigma makes it worse," said Kageyama. "It's not a virus. It's not a flu. Fukushima is still a beautiful place."
Blunderfield and a host of other performing artists are holding a yoga and music fundraiser for The Fukushima Project on Jan. 19, at 10 a.m. at the Vancouver Buddhist Temple. All ages are welcome. Admission is $30 at the door. Donations can also be made at gofundme.com/1ongt4.

Yoga Fam, we're rapidly approaching Feb 2nd, and Will's rockin' performance, talk, & yoga class at the Victoria Yoga Conference. But in the meantime, Will sat down with Hello Yoga to talk about his favorite parts of touring, music, and his recent sold-out yoga experience in Yokohama. Asked his favorite meditation technique, Will says "You just sit cross legged and take a deep breath, and you sigh it out, sit nice and tall, and you say, 'It’s ok, whatever it is, it’s already here. Let me open to it.' and you take another deep breath. And you just open to what is. So, if you start to judge yourself you can just smile at that and recognize that it’s just billions of dollars of advertising. It’s a kind of let go and don’t let anything stop you kind of energy. I think that’s what yoga is all about. It’s one thing to stay connected in a yoga class, but if you want to stay connected outside the class I think you have to train ourself not to care what other people think so much."
Will Blunderfield checks in with Yoga Journal to discuss some of the creative components to his new classes and album, Imagine. While Blunderfield says the album isn’t a huge departure from his signature sound, he did take time to explore some new territory. He notes that there is a song on the album called "Dancing in the Rain", which lyrically and thematically, is unlike any other song people have heard from him (but is very similar to the messages he shares in his classes). Will also explains how his experience hopping from city to city in Japan and the US, brought about the album’s and new hot series' energy.

Will Blunderfield and his management have issued warnings to Japanese fans: “We are permanently based at Chopra Yoga Center & YYoga here in Vancouver performing ‘Glee Yoga’ 6 days a week. We are not performing in any other cities internationally or even in the U.S. until September 2012.
“Recent announcements about the show performing in Japan are totally inaccurate. Potential ticket buyers, sponsors or anybody else is forewarned to not engage in any way with this falsely advertised production. There are Web sites charging up to $200 a ticket for high-end yoga studios and non-existent venues in Tokyo and in Osaka in March.
“It’s a scam -- please tell everybody not to lose their money over this. We were unaware until our fans started asking how long we would be in Japan. Fortunately, Japanese media have now picked up the story to expose the scam.”

Join Nutone label mates Wade Morissette & Will Blunderfield for an unforgettable evening of chant and song!
Chanting is a natural way to tune into the frequency of love. Chanting
combines singing and music with mantras ÷ words and sounds that vibrate
at the highest level of awareness. The vibrations emanating from
singing Sanskrit words have a tangible effect on our own inner being.
It's not important to know what the words mean, or even to believe in
the particular names or forms of God sometimes sung in the chants,
because the ancient sounds themselves carry the energy that brings us
deep inside ourselves where our own nameless, formless connection
resides. The sweetness of chanting stills the mind, dissolves worries,
and opens the heart. The saints describe chanting as a way of becoming
saturated with God's love.

Teacher Jackie Wong said about Will and his music-inspired yoga, “I absolutely love it, Will's talent, beauty and soul are things we can all be thankful for. His words, compassion and encouragement are comparable to none... thankful for all he brings to the world!..” Check out the photo below!

Will's favorite quotes: “Everyone has a purpose in life...a unique or special talent to give to others. And when we blend this unique talent with service to others, we experience the ecstasy and exultation of our own spirit, which is the ultimate goal of all goals.” -- Deepak Chopra
"Any reason for practicing yoga is a good reason. Enhancing flexibility and releasing stress are as noble a purpose for performing yoga as the awakening of spirituality. This is the great gift of yoga it serves and nourishes us at every level of our being and spontaneously contributes to greater wellbeing in all domains of life. Yoga will help you discover gifts within yourself that have remained unopened since your childhood― the gifts of peace, harmony, laughter, and love." -- Deepak Chopra

“I discovered that all I needed was to let the oars go, just flow” - from The River, by Will Blunderfield
Step into a class with Will and be prepared to forget everything you think you know about yoga.
He sings, he dances, he invents. He shakes his Asana.
On any given day with Will you might feel like you’re in an episode of Glee, you might find yourself shaking your booty like J.Lo, unleashing your inner Radio City Rockette, or simply smiling in a pose that once made you grimace.
Is it yoga? Oh, yes.
“I look up to yoga teachers who aren’t afraid to be themselves,” says Will.
Will began practicing yoga when he was a teenager, and an acting student at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City.
From the beginning, teaching was part of his practice. “One of our acting teachers said you have to do yoga, it’s very grounding. He also got us to teach our fellow students hour-long sequences.”
At first, yoga simply helped him chill out. “I thought, oh this is really relaxing! New York is really stressful.”
But there was something deeper there too; it was as if he found a little more of himself each time he closed his eyes and breathed. “Not knowing what my mission was, I was still searching. I think, being that age, I was still susceptible to other people’s opinions. I didn’t really know what I was doing, where I was going.”
On the mat, Will found he could be himself. He also found inspirations, like Sadie Nardini, a New York teacher with a freewheeling style. (She’s been known to teach yoga in cowboy boots.)
“I came to yoga feeling really insecure. I walked around with a root of shame. I was bullied in high school. When you’re different, you get picked on. Yoga helped me so much because I realized I am not that feeling.”
“The mat is a place,” he says, “where we can observe our feelings as they come up, and realize that we are not them.”
Like so many students who come to the mat, Will found that what he encountered there stayed with him when he stepped off the mat. “It is a practice that helps us cultivate the ability to be loving in difficult and different situations.” He hopes every student that comes to his class find their own way of doing yoga, follows the path that works for them and sheds the rest.
“The basic message of the Bhagavad-Gita is your passion is your purpose.... follow your heart is one of the basic teachings of yoga to me.” There is no right way to practice yoga, and the reason for incorporating yoga into life may be different for everyone.
“Yoga means connection. Some people are connecting to their bodies; some feel like they are connecting to the non-thinking mind, to god, or source. Knowing that yoga means connection, I believe that there are over 7 billion ways of connecting to yoga.”
Anything that makes you feel wiser or more loving can be a yogic practice, says Will.
Setting an intention is a central part of his practice, on and off the mat.
“You have to set the intention. That’s been a core teaching of mine. When I feel the ground shaking a little bit, it’s getting dark and getting cold, metaphorically or weather wise, I tried to bring myself back to my original effort, to stand for the highest version of myself, to stay positive and keep looking forward.”
Will isn’t looking for perfection in his practice — or in his students.
“I just want to know how can we use these poses to love ourselves more deeply, to believe in our own being more deeply and more solidly.”
When we practice yoga, Will urges us to do more than practice a pose. “Let us practice embodying qualities that serve us and the world: self-love, tenacity and determination. Use this pose to embody something that will serve you today. Even when I fall out, I know that falling is inevitable. If you fall out of dancers pose, don’t criticize yourself. That’s not your inner being. That’s your inner gremlin. That’s not your true self according to the teachings of yoga.”
When a pose is challenging, he says, “Let us harness that challenge that is presented in this practice, let us ask ourselves are we going to close down because of this, or are we going to open up. If we focus on the intention, the universe tends to conspire to help us more often.”
Will’s debut album, Hallelujah is currently available at Lululemon, Yogapod and YYoga, will be released worldwide by Nutone/Nettwerk in 2011.
On any given day of the week, he can be found, eyeliner and all, teaching and singing his heart out in Vancouver at various YYoga locations.
Will joins forces with Westcoast Hot Yoga! MONDAYS & TUESDAYS @ 2pm YALETOWN LOCATION Combining the power of a transformative hot practice, mindfulness meditation, and an energizing performance off his yoga-inspired pop album, Will transforms your ordinary hot yoga practice into the extraordinary.
